The Bible affirms that women have an essential role in God's kingdom, both in Jesus’ ministry and in the life of the church. Women are empowered by the Holy Spirit to serve, lead, and support one another, using their spiritual gifts to contribute to the growth of the church. Grace Communion International Ottawa-Gatineau’s commitment to women's ministry is grounded in these biblical principles, as it seeks to encourage women to grow spiritually, support one another, and actively use their God-given gifts to further His kingdom. Through empowerment, mentoring, and participation in church activities, women are shaping the future of the church and becoming leaders in God’s mission.
1. Women in Jesus' Ministry
Jesus demonstrated an inclusive attitude toward women, elevating their roles and allowing them to participate actively in His ministry. He did not just teach women but valued and empowered them in their faith.
- Luke 8:1-3 – “After this, Jesus travelled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna, the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.”
This passage shows that women were not only followers of Jesus but were also financially and practically supporting His ministry. They were essential participants in spreading the good news, a vital role that the church continues to honour today.
- John 4:28-29 – “Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, ‘Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?’”
The Samaritan woman at the well became one of the first to publicly proclaim Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus entrusted her with the responsibility of sharing the gospel with others, showing that women have a powerful role in evangelism and leadership.
- Matthew 27:55-56 – “Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.”
Women were present at Jesus’ crucifixion and showed great devotion and loyalty. Their presence at significant moments in Jesus' life highlights their important role in the ministry and in supporting Jesus during His earthly mission.
2. Women Empowered in the Early Church
The early church recognized the gifts and contributions of women. They were leaders, deacons, and prophets, supporting the work of ministry alongside men.
- Acts 2:17-18 – “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.”
This prophetic promise from Joel is fulfilled in the early church, where both men and women received the Holy Spirit and were empowered to prophesy, preach, and serve. Women were recognized as important contributors to God’s mission.
- Romans 16:1-2 – “I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church in Cenchreae. I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.”
Phoebe was a deacon, a recognized position of leadership and service in the early church. She served as a spiritual leader and was instrumental in supporting Paul’s ministry. Her example affirms that women can hold significant roles in the church.
- Philippians 4:2-3 – “I plead with Euodia, and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the Book of life.”
Paul acknowledges the valuable work of Euodia and Syntyche, two women who worked alongside him in spreading the gospel. Their contributions to the work of the church were recognized and honoured, demonstrating that women were active partners in ministry.
3. Women Empowering and Supporting One Another
The Bible also calls on women to support, encourage, and empower each other as they grow in faith and serve God.
- Titus 2:3-5 – “Similarly, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands so that no one will malign the word of God.”
In this passage, older women are called to mentor and teach younger women. This shows the importance of women supporting each other spiritually and practically, strengthening the faith community through mutual encouragement and accountability.
- Proverbs 31:25-26 – “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.”
The Proverbs 31 woman is a picture of strength, dignity, and wisdom. This passage encourages women to embrace their God-given strengths and to empower others through wisdom and faithful living.
- Hebrews 10:24-25 – “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
Women in the church are called to encourage and uplift one another, spurring one another into good deeds and love. This community-building aspect is key to women’s ministry, where women can support each other’s spiritual growth and service.
4. Women Using Their Spiritual Gifts in the Church
Women are gifted by God and called to use their gifts in the church, just as men are. The Holy Spirit empowers all believers to serve and build up the body of Christ.
- 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 – “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”
The Holy Spirit equips all believers, both men and women, with spiritual gifts for the common good of the church. Women have a crucial role to play by using their gifts to build up the body of Christ.
- 1 Peter 4:10-11 – “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God; if anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.”
This passage emphasizes that all believers, including women, are called to use their gifts in service to others for the glory of God. Women's ministry provides a platform for women to discover, develop, and use their gifts in the church.
