Grace Communion International Ottawa-Gatineau’s Worship Team is committed to keeping God at the center of worship, leading the congregation to praise Him with sincerity, truth, and unity. The Bible repeatedly calls believers to worship God with all their hearts, using music and song to express joy, gratitude, and reverence for His greatness. The worship team plays a key role in guiding others into this kind of worship, helping them focus on God as the center of all they do. Through their leadership, the congregation is drawn into deeper communion with God, living out worship not just through song but as a lifestyle devoted to Him.
The Bible consistently emphasizes that worship is not just a ritual, but a heartfelt response to God’s greatness, holiness, and love. Here are some key Bible verses that support the idea of placing God at the center of worship and the role of the worship team in leading others into His presence:
1. Worship God as the Center of Our Praise
Worship is meant to be focused on God alone, acknowledging His greatness, holiness, and majesty. The worship team’s role is to lead the congregation into this focused adoration of God.
-
Psalm 95:6-7: – “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.”
This passage reminds us that worship is an act of reverence and submission to God. As the worship team leads, they help guide the congregation into an attitude of humility and awe before the Creator.
-
Revelation 4:11: – “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”
Worship centers on the worthiness of God. This verse captures the essence of worship—acknowledging God’s sovereignty as Creator of all things and recognizing His glory. The worship team helps the congregation focus on God's ultimate worth and greatness.
-
Psalm 29:2: – “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.”
Worshiping God in His holiness and giving Him the glory due to His name is a central theme throughout the Psalms. The worship team facilitates this process, helping the congregation ascribe to God the honour and reverence that He deserves.
2. The Role of Music and Singing in Worship
Music has a powerful role in expressing worship and drawing people closer to God. The Bible frequently commands the people of God to sing praises to Him.
-
Psalm 100:1-2: 2 – “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.”
Music and singing are integral to worship. The worship team’s role is to lead the congregation in singing joyful praises to God, inviting everyone to come before Him with gladness in their hearts.
-
Colossians 3:16: 16 – “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”
Singing is a way of teaching and encouraging one another in the faith. As the worship team leads, they not only express praise but also help the congregation reflect on the truths of Scripture, teaching and admonishing them through music.
-
Ephesians 5:19-20:– “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
This passage emphasizes that worship is not just about singing songs but doing so from the heart. Worship leaders (the worship team) are called to inspire the congregation to sing with their whole hearts, glorifying God with deep gratitude and sincerity.
3. God Is the Focus of Our Worship
Worship is not about the worship leaders or the music itself but about bringing glory to God. The worship team’s role is to point others to God and keep Him at the center of the worship experience.
-
John 4:23-24:“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
True worship is centred on God, in Spirit and truth. The worship team is instrumental in guiding the congregation to engage in authentic worship—worship that is not about performance but a true, heartfelt response to the Father.
-
Psalm 34:3: – “Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.”
The call to glorify and exalt the name of the Lord is a shared responsibility within the body of Christ. The worship team, as leaders, helps the congregation focus on God’s glory and respond together in praise.
-
Hebrews 13:15: Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.”
Worship is not only an internal experience but an external declaration of God's goodness. The worship team leads the congregation to continually offer God praise, proclaiming His name boldly and with gratitude.
4. The Worship Team as Leaders in Community Worship
The worship team’s role extends beyond musical leadership—they are spiritual guides who help facilitate the congregation’s encounter with God. Through their leadership, they encourage the community to worship with sincerity and unity.
-
1 Chronicles 16:23-25: – “Sing to the Lord, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvellous deeds among all peoples. For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.”
The worship team leads the congregation in proclaiming God’s greatness. This Scripture underscores the worship team’s role in helping the congregation declare God’s salvation and marvellous deeds, not just through music but through their witness in the world.
-
Psalm 150:3-6: – “Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.”
This passage celebrates the various forms of worship, all centred on glorifying God. The worship team, by leading with different instruments and voices, helps create an environment where the congregation can participate fully in praising God with all their hearts.
5. Worship as a Lifestyle
Worship is not confined to singing or church services alone; it is a lifestyle of devotion to God. The worship team’s role is to help the congregation cultivate this lifestyle of worship, where all of life is an offering to God.
-
Romans 12:1: – “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”
True worship is about offering our lives to God as living sacrifices. The worship team helps guide the congregation to worship with their lives, not just through song, by living in obedience to God and glorifying Him in every aspect of life.
-
Matthew 22:37-38: – “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.’”
Worship is a total life response to God’s love. The worship team helps foster an environment where the congregation can express their love for God with all their being, offering every part of themselves in worship.
