Grace Communion International Ottawa-Gatineau’s commitment to investing in youth ministry is supported by Scripture, which affirms the importance of nurturing young people as leaders within the church. The Bible calls youth to serve, lead, and participate in God’s work, empowering them to use their gifts for the growth of the kingdom. Through youth ministry, the church provides a space for young people to develop leadership skills, take on responsibility, and contribute to the body of Christ. By involving youth in various community events and ministry opportunities, the church is preparing them to become the future leaders of the church and the world.
Here are some Bible verses that support our vision of youth involvement in ministry and their role as future leaders of the church:
1. Youth Are Called to Serve and Lead in God’s Kingdom
The Bible makes it clear that young people are not excluded from serving God and contributing to His kingdom. God calls and equips youth to be active participants in His work, both now and in the future.
-
1 Timothy 4:12 – “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.”
Paul encourages Timothy, a young leader, to be an example in his faith and conduct. This verse speaks to the reality that youth can and should lead by example in the church, setting standards for others to follow.
-
Joel 2:28-29 – “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.”
This prophecy highlights that God will empower young people with His Spirit to be active participants in His work. The Grace Communion International Ottawa – Gatineau church should cultivate an environment where youth are encouraged to use their gifts and talents to serve.
2. Youth Are Gifts to the Church
Youth bring unique talents, energy, and creativity to the church, and the Bible affirms that young people have valuable contributions to make.
-
Psalm 127:3 – “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”
Children and youth are gifts from God to the church and society. Investing in their growth and development spiritually is an essential part of nurturing future leaders for the kingdom of God.
-
1 Peter 4:10 – “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
This verse reminds us that every person, regardless of age, has spiritual gifts that should be used to serve the church. Youth, too, are entrusted with gifts that they can offer in ministry, and the church should provide opportunities for them to discover and develop these gifts.
3. Youth Are Called to Responsibility and Service
Youth ministry involves giving young people opportunities to serve and take on responsibilities, helping them develop their leadership skills and grow in their faith.
-
Luke 2:49 – “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”
Even as a child, Jesus showed a deep sense of responsibility toward God’s work. This example encourages young people to take their faith seriously and to actively participate in the life and ministry of the church.
-
Proverbs 20:29 – “The glory of young men is their strength; gray hair the splendor of the old.”
Youth is full of strength and energy, which can be channelled into God’s service. This strength is meant to be used in ways that build the church and its ministries, preparing them for greater leadership in the future.
4. Developing Leadership in Youth Ministry
The church should actively nurture the leadership potential in its young people, helping them assume roles of responsibility within the church community.
-
2 Timothy 2:2 – “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”
Paul instructs Timothy to pass on the knowledge and responsibility to others. This principle applies to youth ministry as well—by training and mentoring youth, the church ensures that the next generation is equipped to lead, teach, and serve others in the future.
-
Matthew 28:19-20 – “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
The Great Commission applies to every believer, including young people. Youth ministry provides opportunities for youth to learn how to disciple others, teaching them the importance of evangelism, outreach, and leadership in spreading the Gospel.
5. Youth Participation Builds the Church Community
By involving youth in ministry, the church fosters a sense of community and belonging. Youth who serve and take on leadership roles grow in their faith and sense of responsibility within the body of Christ.
-
Romans 12:4-5 – “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”
Each member of the church, including youth, has a vital role to play in the life of the community. As they assume responsibilities and participate in ministry, they contribute to the unity and growth of the church.
-
1 Corinthians 12:12-14 – “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.”
Youth, as part of the body of Christ, are called to actively participate and contribute to the church’s mission. Their involvement in various ministries and events helps the entire church grow stronger and more unified.
6. Youth Empowerment for Leadership
Involving youth in leadership roles prepares them to take on greater responsibility in the future, both in the church and beyond. The Bible encourages the training and empowering of younger generations to lead.
-
Titus 2:6-8 – “Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned…”
This passage highlights the importance of youth developing character and leadership qualities. By setting a good example and teaching youth to be self-controlled, serious, and sound in their speech, the church helps cultivate young leaders.
-
Nehemiah 2:18 – “I told them how the gracious hand of my God had been on me and what the king had said to me. They replied, ‘Let us start rebuilding.’ So they began this good work.”
Nehemiah inspires the people to take action and lead the rebuilding of Jerusalem. In the same way, youth in the church are called to step up, lead initiatives, and engage in the good work of ministry.
